Spain!

Barcelona and Valencia

I recently returned from a trip to the Mediterranean cities of Barcelona and Valencia. It was a fun little setup actually. My sister, who lives in Philadelphia was going to do a dance workshop 2 hours from Barcelona and we would meet a few days before to hang out together in Barcelona. My boyfriend and his sister came along as well and after my sister started her workshop, we traveled further on to Valencia. None of us had been to Spain before, but Barcelona is one of those cities you always hear about, and I had always dreamed of visiting, so it was definitely the first city I wanted to see in Spain. Valencia was thrown into the mix because we wanted to catch up with an old friend there, which was a great idea, because we had a wonderful dinner with her.

So anyhow, on this trip, I really went photo crazy. Probably because I am a sucker for Gothic style architecture, I really enjoyed Barcelona. Wandering through the streets of the Barri Gotic was fascinating and something really different for me. (We don’t have any small alleys in Berlin, nothing that old and rustic.) We would just walk and walk and peep into the stores and restaurants that filled these streets, some being literally holes in the wall, and most having a unique and colorful style and appearance from the others. It was pure eye candy. We had many delicious meals in this area too, although unbelievably pricey for us Berliners.

Gothic Center

My real favorite thing about these cities in Spain, was the balconies! I love, love, love balconies. I have a lot of shots of sweet little terraces with wooden shutters or straw blinds, and lots of potted plants with their greenness brightening up the facades. Enjoy! read more…

Berlin Fashion Week Tent

I’ve been to my very first fashion show!

It all took place yesterday at this tent in the middle of Berlin on a warm summery evening. I was helping out at the student show (students of the UDK – Universität der Künste Berlin), on July 1st at 10 pm and my experience took place backstage where all the excitement, stress and 1 hour of craziness took place! read more…

New Collage Series

written June 22nd, 2009 · 2 comments

 Body Collages

The idea for this project came to me as a mental image. I began by taking photographs in my kitchen. The first round of images were not great so I did the photo shoot once again and got a good amount of usable photographs. Then I photoshopped all the images and created the collages in InDesign. I first paired the images. One arm with one leg. I tried to come up with visually interesting combinations with a lot of bodily movement. Then I created the black and white forms between the body parts so as to allude to a hidden torso and also to create tension and visual movement within the square canvas. This was an intuitive process. I didn’t do any sketches for the black and white shapes. I did view the collages as a series though and made sure that each individual piece was standing on its own as well as working with the others, so there was a lot of editing of the black and white shapes after the initial designs were done. read more…

Rokia Traore Posters

written June 22nd, 2009 · 1 comment

A while back, I designed a CD cover for the Rokia Traore album Bowmboï, and since then, I have extended the project to include a poster design as well. I used the circular elements from the CD cover in this design as well, and chose not to include the musical notations that I developed for the CD cover, because I wanted to make the poster more minimal and visually striking.

I have been using my time off to complete all of the projects I have been meaning to complete for the past (sad, I know) year or so. Selling my jewelry online was one of the main projects on my to do list and I have been working towards that goal for a few months, taking high quality photos of my creations and working on many new designs.

So here it is! My Etsy shop is called Chic Handmades.
