Blog Redesign!

written September 10th, 2009 · 0 comments

If you all haven’t noticed yet, my blog has received a face lift! My boyfriend and I worked on it for three evenings this week until I was satisfied and it was definitely worth it. I am happy with the do over. All of the links on the right hand side are now justified left, which makes them easier to read and I moved my Fav Links to the right so that the left side of the blog could be left for my external links. I designed my own badges for my Etsy shop, Flickr page and Website. I can see now that we forgot about my Twitter button, so that will be coming soon. I also added a pic of myself and a short bio to the main layout. Now I just need to pimp out my About Me page!

Unfinished Project…

written August 20th, 2009 · 0 comments

I wanted to start working on my typeface today….but instead I just have a couple bags of wood lying around. I have been into spontaneous and expressionist typefaces that I create by hand, leaving nothing to be controlled except the coordination of brain and hand. I already created one such typeface out of a scribbling writing technique (will post about it when the project is finished) and now I want to carve a typeface out of wood. A very primitive one and something where there isn’t a lot of preparation. I am leaving it up to an idea, a quick sketch and then go! But sadly, I didn’t have the carving tools that I thought I had:(

Go Green

written August 18th, 2009 · 2 comments

Here is a design I did for a T-shirt design contest. I was totally mad that it was rejected on the grounds that it didn’t fit the company’s style (it isn’t illustrative enough I suppose). Sometimes a little variety is good! No, just kidding. I am only mad because the prize was 15,000 Euros and I didn’t even get a shot! Well, I will find another outlet for this design!

New Collage Series

written June 22nd, 2009 · 2 comments

 Body Collages

The idea for this project came to me as a mental image. I began by taking photographs in my kitchen. The first round of images were not great so I did the photo shoot once again and got a good amount of usable photographs. Then I photoshopped all the images and created the collages in InDesign. I first paired the images. One arm with one leg. I tried to come up with visually interesting combinations with a lot of bodily movement. Then I created the black and white forms between the body parts so as to allude to a hidden torso and also to create tension and visual movement within the square canvas. This was an intuitive process. I didn’t do any sketches for the black and white shapes. I did view the collages as a series though and made sure that each individual piece was standing on its own as well as working with the others, so there was a lot of editing of the black and white shapes after the initial designs were done. read more…

Rokia Traore Posters

written June 22nd, 2009 · 1 comment

A while back, I designed a CD cover for the Rokia Traore album Bowmboï, and since then, I have extended the project to include a poster design as well. I used the circular elements from the CD cover in this design as well, and chose not to include the musical notations that I developed for the CD cover, because I wanted to make the poster more minimal and visually striking.

Outrage

written March 25th, 2009 · 1 comment

Planet Money started a conversation here about who to blame for the financial crisis, and I just listened to this great podcast from them called Pointing Fingers. All of this inspired me to do a few collages illustrating the outrage we are all feeling and the inner pull to want to blame someone, anyone for this mess. But would it really be possible and would it help our misery? And how would this solve our problem?

Rokia Traore

written March 22nd, 2009 · 1 comment

This is a CD cover/insert I did as a personal project. I recently heard of Rokia Traore on NPR and really enjoyed her album Bowmboï (her myspace). She collaborated with the Kronos Quartet on a few songs, which are quite eerie and fascinating. I wanted to do a visual representation of a song of hers, Niènafîng, and decided to incorporate that into a CD cover booklet. I found a few interesting reviews of her music and threw those into the layout along with photographs and credits. I simply wanted to capture the flavor of her music and the layers and complexity within, in my artwork. I hope to print it soon and photograph it in a real CD cover.

My Business Card

written March 10th, 2009 · 0 comments

So I began designing my business card as one of the last parts of my job-finding process, which includes other projects such as finishing my website, my resume and cover letters (all done thank you very much)! I have only designed a few designs so far and have now let the project rest for a while so that I can come back to it with more ideas, but I wanted to post the initial designs now. I find it very difficult to design something when the sky is the limit!!! I think I design more creatively and intelligently when there are limits set. Challenges are good! Here are the designs so far.
