Rokia Traore Posters

written June 22nd, 2009 · 1 comment

A while back, I designed a CD cover for the Rokia Traore album Bowmboï, and since then, I have extended the project to include a poster design as well. I used the circular elements from the CD cover in this design as well, and chose not to include the musical notations that I developed for the CD cover, because I wanted to make the poster more minimal and visually striking.

 Shakespeare's Sonnets

Image from Spiegel.de

Back in April after reading a review on Spiegel.de, I immediately bought tickets to see Shakespeares Sonette (german title) directed by Robert Wilson and music written by Rufus Wainwright in Berlin. I was totally intrigued. read more…

Rokia Traore

written March 22nd, 2009 · 1 comment

This is a CD cover/insert I did as a personal project. I recently heard of Rokia Traore on NPR and really enjoyed her album Bowmboï (her myspace). She collaborated with the Kronos Quartet on a few songs, which are quite eerie and fascinating. I wanted to do a visual representation of a song of hers, Niènafîng, and decided to incorporate that into a CD cover booklet. I found a few interesting reviews of her music and threw those into the layout along with photographs and credits. I simply wanted to capture the flavor of her music and the layers and complexity within, in my artwork. I hope to print it soon and photograph it in a real CD cover.

All Songs Considered

written March 3rd, 2009 · 0 comments

I was just listening to All Songs Considered and they were beginning an interesting discussion on their Blog about why we listen to the music we do. I read through the comments and found that most people were writing about specific examples of what they did and did not like, but not why this was, and many others wrote about associating music with past experiences, making certain music significant for them. I wanted to add my 2 cents. read more…

Melody Gardot

written May 18th, 2008 · 0 comments

Wojtek and I went on Wednesday night to see Melody Gardot perform at the Quatsch Comedy Club here in Berlin. It was a great performance, but unfortunately too short! She started 30 minutes late, and this was not the kind of show where there is an opening band and other distractions, this was all her. And then she played a set that lasted just under an hour! All for 24 Euros. I was a tad dissapointed. But then again, who knows what the hold up was, and I am not about to jump to conclusions. It was a good set anyways, and Melody is truely talented! Her first song was a capella, which showcased her talents well. And my other favorite was a piece she did solo on her guitar (I can’t remember the title, and it’s not on her new album). The price of the tickets really did surprise me for someone with a budding career, and on her first tour, but then again, she couldn’t have been appreciated in any of the other cheaper Berlin venues. Tickets per show are around 12 Euros, but it would have been the wrong audience for her. So all in all, it was worth it, and I am glad I could in a small way, support her budding career!
