Torn

written April 1st, 2009 · 0 comments

I am torn between wanting to get more active and involved with things like Twitter, Flickr, Facebook, etc. and just going on with my work and life without trying so hard to connect with people. I want more people to see my website (my design work) and I want to generate interest in this blog of mine . . . but it isn’t THAT important that I have tons of followers or subscribers. In short, I am not doing this for social connections, (however, collaborations would be cool). It is more about having an outlet for my thoughts. Is this the case for everyone? Is this why blogs are so popular? Are there those that write blogs and those that read them? Or does it overlap? I find it hard to do both. How does one find the time! read more…

Internship search…

written March 22nd, 2009 · 0 comments

Hello all:)

I began my application process for internships last week and got 2 callbacks before the week was out! I was happy…but then I realized quickly, that it was too good to be true. The one internship could not guarantee that they would hire me after the 6 month internship, and the work didn’t fit my design personality (not creative enough), so that one was out of the question. And the other internship was a real job in disguise of an internship. I was floored. read more…

Smiles

written March 11th, 2009 · 0 comments

A funny article about how unfriendly Berliners can be, and a video that shows this in action. Although the video is in German, one can get a feeling for this unfriendliness. Oh, and the German government wants to change this! Letting those good old Berliners know that it is ok to smile and let a little sunshine shine through that heart. (Do not take this too negatively! I have many wonderful Berlin friends here!) read more…

Life in Berlin….

written March 11th, 2009 · 0 comments

What to do, what to do, when the economy has gone to sh** and you are a young graphic designer in a city (Berlin) overflowing with other similar creative minds and you want to find a job!?!?! Apparently Berlin hasn’t recognized that Germany is in a recession because Berlin was always in an economic slump (see Spiegel Online article), but I am noticing the difference. As someone who has scanned design jobs online periodically over the past 3 years, I see a huge drop in job options. What once used to be a 4 page (or more) job opportunity section of a popular magazine here (Zitty), has now been reduced to barely a page! Job listings online go back to the beginning of February, before you even get through the first page of results!!! That is why right now, I am finding myself looking for an internship! As someone who needs to push on in her field of experise and not digress, an internship is the only option to get valuable experience at good companies (as far as I can see). I’ll keep you posted on what comes my way.

My Fitness Program

written February 24th, 2009 · 0 comments

I am trying to save money at the moment and also trying to keep in shape (unlike many past winters)! So I have devised a few ways of keeping fit in these tight economic times. I don’t know if it is maturity or the fact that this winter might be longer than anticipated that has gotten me thinking more seriously about staying fit. And I don’t know if it is my lack of funds that has made me think intelligently about how to stay in shape on my own, but these two motivations combined have made all the difference.

First of all, I dug up my Pilates book, which I haven’t used since my days at RISD, when I was doing Pilates almost everyday, going to the gym, swimming and still doing ballet (not the case today). I had to begin (sadly) with only the basic exercises before I could do the more fun and challenging ones, but I am so happy I got back into it! I feel much stronger and I really do feel the change in my strength (especially my abs) even when I am just walking around or cleaning. The book I use is written by Brooke Siler, a certified Pilates Method instructor. It provides great mental images that help you do the exercises correctly. One day, I will take a real class and see if I have been doing the exercises correctly all along!

I am also going for walks around the park/construction site behind my apartment for 30 minutes a few times a week. I vary my speed throughout for a better workout for my dear heart and I bring my Ipod with me with the latest downloads from EconTalk or Planet Money. It’s just good to get out of the house and get some fresh air! And even if the weather is suckie, which it usually is, I can be distracted enough by my podcast and pumping heart not to care!

So this is my fitness routine as of now. I don’t spend any money on it, and so far, I am feeling great despite the weather outside!

Melody Gardot

written May 18th, 2008 · 0 comments

Wojtek and I went on Wednesday night to see Melody Gardot perform at the Quatsch Comedy Club here in Berlin. It was a great performance, but unfortunately too short! She started 30 minutes late, and this was not the kind of show where there is an opening band and other distractions, this was all her. And then she played a set that lasted just under an hour! All for 24 Euros. I was a tad dissapointed. But then again, who knows what the hold up was, and I am not about to jump to conclusions. It was a good set anyways, and Melody is truely talented! Her first song was a capella, which showcased her talents well. And my other favorite was a piece she did solo on her guitar (I can’t remember the title, and it’s not on her new album). The price of the tickets really did surprise me for someone with a budding career, and on her first tour, but then again, she couldn’t have been appreciated in any of the other cheaper Berlin venues. Tickets per show are around 12 Euros, but it would have been the wrong audience for her. So all in all, it was worth it, and I am glad I could in a small way, support her budding career!

Plants

written September 23rd, 2007 · 5 comments

I re-potted my babies last weekend:) My plants, that is. They look sooo happy now! I bought green pots which go perfectly with the green paint in the living room. And I bought 2 little cacti, to join the one I have. They probably won’t start to really grow until next summer, but I can wait.
