I do so much collaging in my sketchbooks that I have decided to start scanning the pages and posting them here on my blog. Lately I have been very inspired by jewelry on the runway since I started designing my own! But I am still always clipping pics of hot fashion, after all, a necklace or pair earrings has to be worn with the right outfit and I have to know what’s in! The fashion for this Fall is really exciting for me because big statement necklaces are in, as well as long chains. I will be posting more on Fall fashion soon, but for now, let’s take a look at some fashion from the last year mixed in with what’s in now. The things in my sketchbooks are still inspiring for me long after I paste them in. A good idea is a good idea and it is not always about trends! If your always following trends, or designing for them, then you are most likely copying ideas and it is good to ignore trends sometimes to fuel the pure creativity. Enjoy these snippets from my sketchbook!

This is from a year ago, but it puts me in the mood for Fall and I still love love love that hat! read more…

The idea for this project came to me as a mental image. I began by taking photographs in my kitchen. The first round of images were not great so I did the photo shoot once again and got a good amount of usable photographs. Then I photoshopped all the images and created the collages in InDesign. I first paired the images. One arm with one leg. I tried to come up with visually interesting combinations with a lot of bodily movement. Then I created the black and white forms between the body parts so as to allude to a hidden torso and also to create tension and visual movement within the square canvas. This was an intuitive process. I didn’t do any sketches for the black and white shapes. I did view the collages as a series though and made sure that each individual piece was standing on its own as well as working with the others, so there was a lot of editing of the black and white shapes after the initial designs were done. read more…

Planet Money started a conversation here about who to blame for the financial crisis, and I just listened to this great podcast from them called Pointing Fingers. All of this inspired me to do a few collages illustrating the outrage we are all feeling and the inner pull to want to blame someone, anyone for this mess. But would it really be possible and would it help our misery? And how would this solve our problem?

Here is the most final design so far.

An article I read by Cathy Horyn on NYTimes.com made me put the fashion shows of Fall 2009 in perspective. Instead of just saying, ah yes, I like this outfit or not, I needed to look at the fashion collections as art and put them into the context of the world’s economic situation. This was an interesting experiment. I found that I was more attracted to certain pieces once I realized that the designers were responding to a larger inspiration than beauty and trends (such as the Prada collection). Of course fashion designers are connected to current events and can be real artists at times and not just trendsetters, but this can be easily forgotten. read more…

Even though I wasn’t blown away by this collection, I enjoyed the idea that the models were women walking down the street with their purses, lattes and magazines in their arms. Dsquared collections are usually more casual and very real in terms of what many women wear daily, but putting the models in this context really drives the idea home. It is not a completely original idea, but i admire the creativity.

I am revisiting Marc by Marc Jacobs’ warm and fuzzy collection. I realized that it is actually nice to be looking at this year’s upcoming fall fashion because the warm and cozy looks fit perfectly to the weather we have now. Maybe Marc Jacobs was inspired by the long winter we are experiencing now.
